From Dad Bod to Dad God: Making Time to Work Out

Being a stay-at-home dad is no small feat. My days are packed with a never-ending list of tasks, from school runs and laundry to doctor's appointments and sport practices. Amid this whirlwind, finding time to work out might seem like an impossible dream. However, with a bit of creativity and planning, My goal is to transform from dad bod to dad God while inspiring my kids to lead a healthy, active lifestyle.

The quiet hours before the kids wake up can be a golden opportunity for some "me time." My intention is to set my alarm a bit earlier and dedicate this peaceful period to workout. Whether it's a quick run, a gym session, or a yoga practice, starting your day with exercise can boost your energy and set a positive tone for the day ahead.

Of course I run into mornings where I’ve had a rough night’s sleep. Cash wakes up for a diaper change, one of the kids can’t sleep, or I just can’t get in that comfortable position to fall back asleep. Whatever the reason, it is important to get that workout in. I say work-out but really, its meaningful movements. Movements that will increase your heartrate, get the blood flowing, and utilize your muscles/joints. And who says workouts have to be solitary? If I can’t get up early for a workout then it looks like I have to do it with the kids awake. What’s great about this is my kids are watching what I’m doing and sometimes want to join in or do some form of exercise themselves. Of course we run into the lifting weights and kids circling around you bit so they also get some gym etiquette out of it too. By prioritizing my health and fitness, I’m setting a powerful example for my kids. We talk to them about why staying active is important and how it benefits your body and mind. We encourage them to join us and celebrate their efforts and achievements, no matter how small.

I’ve learned to just get in what I am able. It's important to set achievable fitness goals and be flexible with your routine. Set the intention and do what you can. Some days might not go as planned, actually, most days don’t go as planned, and that's okay. The key is consistency over perfection. Even if you can only manage a 10-minute workout, it's still progress.

Remember, your well-being is crucial for the well-being of your family. Regular exercise not only improves physical health but also reduces stress, enhances mood, and boosts overall energy levels. Make self-care a priority, and don't hesitate to ask for help when needed. Whether it's a partner, a friend, or a babysitter, having support can make a significant difference in maintaining your fitness routine.

Track your progress and celebrate milestones with your family. Whether it's a family bike ride to mark your first month of consistent workouts or a special healthy meal to celebrate a fitness achievement, involving your kids in these celebrations can reinforce the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

Balancing the demands of being a stay-at-home parent, is undoubtedly challenging. However, by incorporating fitness into your daily routine and making it a family affair, you can transform your dad bod into a dad God. Not only will you improve your own health, but you'll also inspire your kids to lead active, healthy lives. Remember, it's not about perfection but about making progress and enjoying the journey together. So lace up those sneakers, get moving, and watch as your family grows stronger and healthier, one workout at a time.
