A Mother's Wish: Part 2

Preparing for this transition involved meticulous planning. It meant finding the right advocate to fight alongside us to secure what Maya needs, hiring an educational lawyer, and gaining support from family. Maya’s needs were not being met in a traditional school setting, so we needed these support systems to help us battle for Maya’s placement in the appropriate program.

Thanks to our advocate, we were also able to arrange ABA services at home for Maya. The hope is that with the ABA school program and home services, we can fulfill Corrine’s wish for Maya to achieve as much independence as possible and eventually transition to a group home setting.

However, the path we are on is not an easy one. As I mentioned before, it feels like we take a couple of steps forward only to be pushed further back. The root cause of these setbacks is unclear and could be due to multiple variables, but Maya has regressed significantly. We are approaching a year of home services, and unfortunately, we haven’t seen much, if any, progress in her skills.

This journey has been challenging, and Corrine expressed her concerns before passing. She knew changes were coming and that it would be difficult for us. Navigating the special needs world is tough on its own, but taking on a special needs child who has just lost her parent, a single mother that was her constant, and has been thrust into a new home with four cousins, a new school, and a completely new life is an entirely different struggle. Maya is not the same kid.

Despite these challenges, we do have moments of triumph and heartwarming breakthroughs. Every small victory, whether it’s a new skill learned or a challenge overcome, is a step closer to Maya achieving her independence and fulfilling Corrine’s wish.

To all the parents and caregivers out there facing similar journeys, know that you are not alone. Your dedication and love are the driving forces behind your child's growth and happiness. Celebrate the small victories, seek out supportive communities, and never stop believing in your child's potential. The road may be long and winding, but the destination is worth every step.

My sister-in-law's wish for Maya is a beautiful reminder of the power of hope and perseverance. Together, we can support and uplift each other, ensuring that every child, no matter their needs, has the opportunity to live a life of independence, dignity, and joy.
